The Green Flash concert series lets viewers sip cocktails and watch the sea creatures swim by, all set to lively music
The aquarium’s Green Flash concerts are a treasure in their own right.
On May 20, longtime San Diego singer/songwriter Steve Poltz performed at the legendary Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco, home of storied concerts by the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. The next day, he played at the stunning Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, recording site of mega-selling live albums by the Dave Matthews Band and U2.
But the show that he’s really jazzed about is his July 19 concert at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, home to sea horses, moon jellies and a rescued loggerhead sea turtle. Poltz is once again a headlining performer at the aquarium’s annual Green Flash Concert Series, and he can’t wait.
“It’s one of the best venues anywhere. I’m not kidding you,” Poltz said of the monthly summer concerts, which are held outside on the aquarium’s Tide Pool Plaza. “There is just something special about playing next to the tremendous energy that is the Pacific Ocean. Every time they ask me to play, I jump at the opportunity. It’s an instant, ‘Yes,’ for me.”
With their killer views, stunning sunsets and close encounters of the fishy kind, the Green Flash concerts are a singular San Diego sensation, no matter which side of the stage you’re on.
